The high amount of phosphate groups present in nucleic acids (with high affinity for gold and magnetite) increase exponentially the likelihood of nonspecific binding, along with other parameters such as the density of bound molecules can affect significantly the efficiency of hybridization in the case of using functionalized NPs in detection.
